How tokens work
You are charged for the tokens a request actually uses — the passages retrieved from your site, the system prompt, the visitor’s question, and the reply.
$1 buys 500,000 tokens — the same on every plan and every top-up. Larger plans do not cost less per token; they simply save you topping up. Choose on volume, not on unit price.
Actual usage varies with prompt size, response length, the model you select, and features such as citations and embeddings.

The plugin is free. Use your own OpenAI, Claude or Gemini key and your provider bills you directly — no plan, no tokens, no proxy fees. You manage the provider account, and semantic search needs an OpenAI or Google key for embeddings.
You pay for AI service usage, not plugin software
Vamika, Iris AI, and Iris Theme Kit are GPLv2-or-later software. Buying tokens pays only for metered external AI API usage and hosted service usage. It does not restrict installing, modifying, or redistributing the theme or plugins.
The plugins are optional. AI features require a paid external service or, where supported, your own compatible API key.

How far does the free allowance go?+
A single answered question usually costs under 2,000 tokens — the visitor's question, the passages retrieved from your site, and the reply. So 300,000 covers roughly 150 questions, and the 50,000 added each month covers about 25 more. Your dashboard shows exactly what you're using.
What happens if I run out?+
The chat stops answering and shows your custom message. Top up or subscribe and it resumes immediately. Email alerts warn you before you reach zero, and the free monthly tokens arrive on the 1st regardless.
Do tokens expire?+
Top-up tokens never expire. Plan allowances refresh on your billing date rather than rolling over, so choose a plan on your typical month rather than your busiest.
Is indexing charged separately?+
Indexing generates an embedding for each passage of your content. There's no generated answer and no retrieved context, so it's far cheaper per call than answering a question — and you pay once rather than per visitor. On a site with thousands of pages the initial index is still a real one-off cost.
How many sites can one account cover?+
Up to 5 domains on the hosted service. Bring-your-own-key has no domain limit, since you're using your own provider account.
